Biopic
Michael qualified from St Thomas’ Hospital Medical School in 1985. He trained in medicine, before starting ophthalmology in 1989, gaining general ophthalmology experience in Oxford, Birmingham, Brisbane, and London. Following two years of neuro-ophthalmology training at St Thomas’ Hospital, the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery and Moorfields Eye Hospital he took up his Consultant post in Birmingham in 1997.

Michael is an internationally recognised lecturer and trainer with a research interest in papilloedema and idiopathic intracranial hypertension. He has a particular interest in international ophthalmology and has helped to establish formal links between his ophthalmology department and that of the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre in Moshi, Tanzania, and between the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and the College of Ophthalmologists of East Central and Southern Africa.

He has held a variety of managerial and educational positions including the Chair of the NICE Cataract Guideline development committee. He was Chair of the Scientific Committee of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists for three years before being elected President of the College in 2017
